LIE: Weight training will make you ‘bulky’ or look like a man.
You won’t. Men have a hard time getting bulky – women almost cannot do it unless they work extremely hard and possibly take “supplements” (not of the legal variety). Men have to work very hard, eat large quantities of food AND they have the benefit of high testostorone levels.
LIE: High Reps and low weights will make you ‘toned’, low reps and heavy weights will make you big
More is not better. High repeition work is not only a waste of time and energy, it will not stress your muscles enough to cause them to change. We strongly hesitate to use the word ‘tone’ except that most people do relate to the word and its implied meaning. See above for the low reps/heavy weights answer.
LIE: If you stop lifting weights your muscle will turn to fat
Impossible. Flat out impossible. Google it if you don’t believe us.
LIE: You should lose weight before you start training
This is sheer idiocy. Weight training is one of the most effective methods of body transformation bar almost none. Weight training can help you lose weight. Furthermore, weight training is completely scalable to any strength level.
LIE: I only want to lose weight from my bum/waist/legs. I’ll just target those areas.
Spot reduction does not work. You can’t just do ab exercises and hope the fat from your midsection disappears. Sorry but it doesn’t work like that! This is a good thing though… At least you know when you work hard and get real results, you’ve earnt them!
